October 2023
This blog is very late. It’s been a crazy busy few months but I’m back and making the best of it.
All the best fall colors happen in October. It’s so lovely to walk around and enjoy the scenery, I hope you get a feel for what Kodiak felt like.

Patches of light along the Mountains
Mountains and trees with spots of light contrasted with deep shadows and dark skies are some of my favorite scenes to photograph.
The Trees begin to Turn
These groupings are some of my best fall images from the island so far. I should have a solid stock to pick from for future calendars for a while.
These groups were all taken the same day, early in the month in Middle Bay. Light faded in and out of the valley and I wandered along the road just enjoying the afternoon with a light breeze.
Kodiak Peaks
Sometimes it’s nice just to zoom in to the mountain peaks and have a quick, beautiful composition.
Tusty and Birds
The Trusty Tusty had some issues this month. Luckily I got some quick photos while she was in town before going to the repair yard.
Incredible red sky at St. Paul Harbor
These made for great stock photos for future stories about fisheries.
More Stock Photos for Work
There are so many images in this set, definitely make sure to click through the whole gallery here. I’m constantly needing just random stock photos from around town
I can never have enough photos from the harbor for stories about fisheries. It’s always good to have plenty to rotate around.
Ammonia Refrigeration Class in Kodiak
This was one of the first trainings in the state to teach about Ammonia Refrigeration, the primary way the state’s seafood stays chilled and fresh. Read the full story here.
Fort Abercrombie
Four tree images with very different compositions. Which one is your favorite?
Waves at Surfer’s Beach
I love the way the light shines through the waves right before they crash.
The waves also make for a great foreground. The sand also has awesome patterns from the way the waves crash on them.
Great Sunsets
The colors in the sky are lovely sometimes, and the flocks of birds add so much life to scenes.
Trees in Fog
It’s been incredibly rainy and cloudy year for me. Maybe it’s because it’s an island, maybe it’s just been a year of bad weather but I’ve been doing the best I can with what I’ve been given.
The KANA Marketplace opens, along with the Islander Bookshop’s new location
The Kodiak Area Native Association opened a new mall downtown. It’s amazing that a small community of just 10,000 people on this island in the Gulf of Alaska can afford to open a beautiful new building like this. Read the full story here.
