New Year, New Blog

In an effort to be better at sharing my images, at the end of every month, I will share some of my best stills here. I despise instagram’s algorithm and refuse to let likes define my photography. My galleries will remain up and sorted by subject matter, but this blog will be where to stay current with my latest work.

Image 1 - Incredibly misty day with some small waves on Near Island.

Images 2 & 3 - Sand patterns on White Sands Beach. I felt Image 2 looked like a volcano erupting as the water splashed onto the scene. Image 3 is part of a long term project of finding tree shapes in the contrast between the light and dark sands.

Image 4 & 5 - Fun minimalist scenes as fog and clouds rolled around the bays seen from Deadman’s Curve. I thought a 3 x 1 crop gave a suitable amount of negative space to let the subjects breathe.

Image 6 - A close up of the moonrise in the Belt of Venus. The timing was so perfect I couldn’t resist - even if I couldn’t find an amazing composition I loved the colors.

Image 7 - Another minimalist scene of some islands in the distance. The water and clouds made excellent color blocking then.

Image 8 & 9 - Stone cliffs covered in snow as waves crash along the shore in a blizzard. It looks a bit like fog, but it’s actually the snowstorm that creates that “haze” and depth to the image. I started to lose track of time while I was out and before I knew it, the sun had set and I had to find my way back in the dark.

Image 9 - A mushroom cloud from a failed rocket launch. Luckily no one was hurt. I was excited to do a long exposure and capture the arc of the rocket as it rose, but shortly after countdown we saw this puff of smoke appear. I quickly took off my filters and zoomed in to catch all of the detail in the smoke that was visible from downtown Kodiak.

Images 10 and 11 - Beautiful clouds cresting over mountain ranges on the island. Image 10 had incredible layers and depth to the scene, and right next to it was Image 11, where I felt there was an incredible story in how the mountain retained shape despite being backlit. It would have been easy to expect a silhouette but the clouds reflect just a bit of light back to the ground there.

Image 12 - A waterfall near what I assume is a gravel pit near the road. The waterfall is only there after days of rain or snowmelt, but I love how it cascades along the artificial levels from the pit.

Images 13 & 14 - My first successful attempt at photographing the northern lights. I was out at a very popular beach and met some nice folks who were also out doing the same as I was. Next time I have the right conditions, I’d love to hike a bit and be in a bit more of a private location to ensure I get more unique photos.

Image 15 - A snowy day with a lamppost nearby. I loved how it lit the scene and I’ll probably share it as Christmas edges near once again. Just feels very festive.

Image 16 - Windmills in clouds. Kodiak is powered almost entirely by renewable resources and I just happened to get an amazing angle on these.

Image 17 - Fisherfolk during the tanner crab stand down/strike. Processors didn’t pay enough for fisherfolk to turn a profit, so many of them hung out near the boats, harbors, cafes, and basically doing busywork until they could get better offers.

Image 18 - Pyramid Mountain seen through cracks in Buskin Lake. I’ve been enjoying turning my camera upside-down lately and playing with abstract perspectives.
